1. What are the benefits of joining the SSUWC?

There are many, but here are a few:

• Advocating at the national level on issues of interest to women through our support  for the efforts of the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW).
• Furthering the education of women and girls by raising funds  and offering scholarships at the CEGEP, University and Vocational school levels
• Exploring new subjects through a series of speakers at our monthly meetings.
• Participating in Interest Groups that encourage exploration into the arts, books and theatre; socializing; and exploring the culinary and cultural aspects of our society. 
• Enjoying membership in the CFUW and Graduate Women International (GWI), including reciprocal privileges at all national clubs and access to international clubs

2. Do I have to have a university degree  to join?

The club welcomes women of all ages and from all walks of life, with or without a university degree.  We ask only that you share our values. 

3. What are the annual dues?

Current fee is $100, payable on joining.

4. You mentioned monthly meetings.  Where and when are they held?

Our regular meetings are held the last Tuesday evening of October, November, February, March, and April at Champlain College, 900 Riverside Drive, St. Lambert, in room A114.  In addition, we have two dinner meetings – in January and May.  The opening meeting in September is a meet and greet that features recipients of our scholarships. The Annual General Meeting is held with the May dinner.

5. Can you provide more information on the interest groups? 

At least one of the following should catch your interest:  Art History, Book Discussion. Bridge, Fun with Cooking, Movies and Theatre, Out-to-Lunch,  and Sex. Lies and Financial Literacy.  Joining an interest Group is an excellent way to make new friends and expand your knowledge.

6. And what about the commitment to advocacy, especially encouraging women to pursue an education? How does that work?

SSUWC influences public policy through advocacy and encourages education by offering scholarships and bursaries. The club is a member of the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW), a nonpartisan national volunteer organization with over 8,000 members in various clubs across Canada.  CFUW has special consultative status at the United Nations and representation at the Education Committee of the Canadian Commission to UNESCO.  As a member organization of CFUW, we are committed to improving the status of women and girls, promoting education, and advancing human rights, justice and peace.
