Cleaning the gas hob to make it gleam without damaging the surface: this is what the experts recommend

It is advisable to use specific products for this task and avoid abrasive chemicals

As much as we like to cook, there is one essential task that needs to be done at home after preparing a meal: cleaning the appliances and utensils used. For the second case we have dishwashers, but for the first it will depend on the type of appliance we have used and how we will have to proceed.

For example, we have already seen in this article what to do if we have a ceramic hob or induction hob and today we are going to focus on the classic gas hobs, both the traditional steel ones and the more modern ones made of tempered glass.

Cleaning our gas hobs is not just a matter of hygiene or making the kitchen look cleaner for visitors, because as the Bosch experts point out, regular cleaning of the gas hob contributes to its proper functioning and safety. In fact, having a clean hob and clean burners has several added advantages:

  • Greater efficiency: both in the use of gas and in the distribution of heat
  • Greater safety when burning gas: the accumulation of grease and residue can obstruct the burners, affecting the quality of the flame and causing it to go out and potentially cause an accident
  • Durability of the equipment: proper and regular cleaning prevents corrosion and wear of materials.
  • Bad odors: by removing food debris we prevent the proliferation of bacteria and bad odors.

How to clean a steel or glass gas hob

Before starting to clean, it is important to check that the hob is completely cold to avoid burns and damage to the materials. Once this is done, we will need a sponge or scouring pad, neutral soap or mild dishwasher detergent, warm water, white vinegar or baking soda, a dry cloth and an old toothbrush for tough stains.

We will start by carefully removing the grills and burners. Both the independent and the continuous ones are easy to remove and clean. Simply fill the sink or a bucket with soap and water (or vinegar if they are very dirty) and use the sponge or scouring pad all over the surface. There are also models that can be put in the dishwasher. Then we put them to one side and clean the rest of the hob.

For glass gas hobs: use a sponge moistened with soapy water and clean with gentle movements. Only if there are traces of sugar stuck on the glass or something similar can we use a scraper to remove them. Of course, as recommended by Balay, you should avoid abrasive products and sharp utensils to prevent scratching.

For stainless steel gas hobs: use a soft cloth and a specific cleaning product, avoiding rubbing hard on the areas around the controls, as the screen-printed symbols and indications could be erased. Finally, dry the hob as soon as possible to avoid water marks.

Now it is the turn of the burners, essential elements for the system to work properly. As they point out from Teka, special attention must be paid to the orifices, which must always be clean so as not to obstruct the passage of gas and to ensure that the flame is always uniform.

Clean the burners with soap and water, making sure to remove any grease or food residue. Here you can use a toothbrush to clean the orifices and leave them free of obstructions.

Finally, dry everything thoroughly, both the burners and the grills, before putting everything back together, as over time moisture could affect the enamel and the efficiency of the flame.
