The Cimex Lectularius is one of the most uncomfortable insects for people, due to the various annoyances that its infestation can cause, which is why many want to prevent it from appearing in their homes, although this can sometimes be a difficult task.
The correct way to eliminate them precisely is to attack their weak points, since even though they are one of the most resistant insects to insecticides, having a wide range of possibilities for them.
Eliminate chiches by taking advantage of their greatest weakness
Eliminating bedbugs can be a challenge, but taking advantage of their vulnerability to extreme temperatures is an effective strategy without the use of harsh chemicals. The following are methods that use heat and cold to eradicate them
- Use of high temperatures
Exposure to temperatures above 45°C can kill bedbugs at all stages of their life cycle, including eggs. The most common methods are:
- Washing and drying: Infested bedding, clothing and fabrics should be washed in hot water (at least 60°C) and dried in a tumble dryer on a high setting for at least 30 minutes.
- Use of steam: Steam cleaners are effective for treating mattresses, sofas, carpets and cracks where bedbugs can hide. The steam must exceed 70°C to guarantee their elimination.
- Ambient heat: There are professionals who use portable heat chambers to raise the temperature of an entire room above 50°C for several hours. This can eliminate infestations completely.
- Use of low temperatures
Low temperatures are also lethal to bedbugs, provided that the cold is sufficient and is maintained for the necessary time:
- Freezing: Infested objects, such as clothing or small items, can be sealed in airtight bags and placed in a freezer at -18°C or below for at least 4 days. This kills both the insects and the eggs.
- Extreme cold air: Although less common, sub-zero temperatures during winter can help to disinfect furniture or other objects when exposed to the cold for long periods, as long as they are adequately protected from moisture.
The combination of these techniques, together with thorough cleaning and sealing cracks and hiding places, helps to effectively control and eliminate bedbugs, minimizing the use of pesticides. It is key to repeat the treatments regularly, as the bedbug eggs can hatch days later.
