With the first rays of sunshine, even the hidden corners of your home become visible – high time for a thorough spring clean! Now is the perfect moment to clean the areas that only need to be cleaned once a year.
While some areas of the home – such as the bathroom or kitchen – are cleaned regularly, others are often forgotten. However, this is not a problem, because some places do not need to be cleaned weekly or monthly. There are certain areas of the home that only need a thorough clean once a year. These are the places we tackle during our spring cleaning!
1. clean out and clean the wardrobe
The wardrobe is a place where not only clothes but also dust and clutter accumulate over time. Once a year, you should take the time to completely empty it and sort out unworn or damaged clothes. Donate, sell or dispose of items you no longer wear. Take the opportunity to thoroughly clean the inside of the closet with a damp cloth. If the closet has absorbed unpleasant odors, scented lavender sachets or small bowls of baking soda will help to neutralize them.
2. Clean behind and under furniture
How often do you move your heavy furniture away from the wall or lift the sofa? Probably not very often – and that’s exactly why dust, crumbs and even small lost items accumulate there over months. At least once a year, it’s worth moving larger pieces of furniture and thoroughly vacuuming and wiping the hidden corners.
3. Wash curtains and drapes
Curtains and drapes are real dust magnets! During the course of a year, they absorb not only dust but also odours from the air, such as cooking vapours or smoke. To keep your window decorations fresh and clean, you should take down the curtains and wash them at least once a year. Be sure to follow the care instructions, as not every material can be machine-washed.
4. clean carpets
Even if you vacuum your carpets regularly, this is not enough to remove ingrained dirt and bacteria. You should therefore have your carpets thoroughly cleaned once a year. Small carpets can often be put in the washing machine, while large carpets should be treated with a special carpet cleaner or steam cleaner. Alternatively, a professional carpet cleaning service can help to freshen up colors and remove stubborn stains. This not only ensures hygiene, but also extends the life of the carpet.
5. Polish wooden furniture
Wooden furniture gives every room a cozy atmosphere, but over time it loses its shine. Dust, sunlight and dry heated air take their toll on the material. Once a year, you should therefore treat your wooden furniture with a special wood care product or a natural polish, such as one made from linseed oil and vinegar. This protects the surface, accentuates the wood grain and ensures that your furniture stays beautiful for a long time. Tip: Avoid microfiber cloths, as they can leave fine scratches.
